Brandon Lucia, a Carnegie Mellon professor who recently founded Efficient Computer, a company that is producing a general purpose chip said to be up to 100 times more energy-efficient than leading general-purpose CPUs, talks through the company’s reconfigurable dataflow processor architecture, explaining just how much of an impact he believes this innovation will have where AI and ML are used in IoT devices at the edge and, maybe overtime, in the data centre itself.

Patrick van der Wilt, Chief Commercial Officer, Penta Infra, describes the journey on which the company has embarked as a fast growing European provider of edge data centres. Currently, the company’s portfolio consists of 12 data centres, with plans to grow to 30+ over the next few years, identifying new opportunities to bring sustainable facilities to communities across an increasing range of locations.

Daniel Thorpe, Associate Director of Data Centre Research at JLL, explains the reasons behind the edge data centre market’s predicted doubling by 2026 – with data regulation, low latency demand and IoT growth the main drivers. Daniel also discusses the urgent need for the renewal of aging power infrastructure across Europe, and elsewhere, currently ill-equipped to handle the increased demand for both electrification and the digital infrastructure boom of which edge applications (many driven by AI) are a significant part.

Ivana Bartoletti, Global Chief Privacy and AI Governance Officer at Wipro, also a Council of Europe adviser on AI and human rights, provides some fascinating insights into the EU AI Act, the UK’s upcoming AI Bill, as well as relevant US legislation, in terms of how much AI regulation is actually based on existing laws around privacy and non-discrimination and also about achieving the balance between AI innovation and AI ethics. Ultimately, AI is set to make a major, positive contribution to our quality of life, so long as AI-driven challenges, such as misinformation and bias, can be kept under control.
